Bernhard Mattes (born July 8, 1956 in Wolfsburg ) is the former President of the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and former Chairman of the Management Board of Ford-Werke GmbH .

At the end of 2019, Mattes stepped down as President of the VDA.

Studies and career

His father was a senior executive at Volkswagen , so that he was influenced by the automotive industry at an early age. He studied economics at the University of Hohenheim . After graduating with a degree in business administration , he began his professional career at BMW AG in 1982 .

In 1999 he moved to Cologne , where he became the director of sales and marketing at Ford-Werke AG. On September 12, 2002, he became CEO of Ford-Werke AG. Since the name was changed to a GmbH, he was chairman of the management board. Effective February 1, 2006, he was appointed Vice President of Ford Motor Company and also headed the Ford Customer & Service Division in Europe. On January 1, 2017, he handed over his role at Ford Germany to Gunnar Herrmann.

On March 1, 2018, he was appointed President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry to succeed Matthias Wissmann .

On August 19, 2019, Mattes announced his resignation as President of the VDA at the end of the year.

Private

Mattes is married and has two daughters.

honors and awards

On January 13, 2011, the ADAC honored the manager in Munich with the "Gelber Engel" award in the "Personality" category for his outstanding services in the fields of traffic, mobility and automobiles.
