Burkhard Johannes Göke (born June 26, 1956 in Wolfsburg , Lower Saxony ) is a German internist and medical director and chairman of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE).

Life

Burkhard Göke grew up in Wolfsburg and reached 1975 on Ratsgymnasium the town's high school . After serving in the army, he studied human medicine in Göttingen (1976–1982). In 1982 he received his doctorate from the Institute of Pharmacology ( Arnold Hasselblatt ). med., joined the gastroenterology and endocrinology department of the Göttingen University Hospital ( Werner Creutzfeldt ) as an assistant doctor . Göke moved to the Center for Internal Medicine at the Philipps University in Marburg (Rudolf Arnold) in 1984 and completed his habilitation there in 1988. He was recognized as a doctor for gastroenterology and endocrinology. In 1989 he was awarded a Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG). He completed research stays in Manchester (UK; Maynard Case) and Ann Arbor (USA; John A. Williams ). In 1993 he became professor for gastrointestinal endocrinology in Marburg and head of a clinical research group at the DFG. In 1998 Göke was appointed full professor and chief physician at the Inselspital of the University of Bern (Switzerland) and in 2000 at the Großhadern Clinic of the University of Munich (LMU). There he was director of Medical Clinic 2 until 2014 and medical director and chairman of the board of the clinic from 2008 to 2013. Burkhard Göke has been medical director and chairman of the board of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) since January 2015.

Burkhard Göke is married and has eight children.

Burkhard Göke has published more than 500 original scientific papers, overviews, book chapters and case reports. He took care of the organization of research associations in Marburg and Munich (KFG GI-Endokrinologie Marburg; KFO 128 Munich). His research dealt with, among other things, the physiology of the pancreas , the therapy of neuroendocrine tumors , the control of hormone release from the endocrine pancreas by intestinal hormones and, in particular, with the incretins that regulate blood sugar. His work has supported the development of new diabetes drugs.
