Arnold Hasselblatt (born June 20, 1929 in Reval ) is a German pharmacologist .

Life

After studying medicine in Göttingen, Hasselblatt continued to work at the Georg-August University of Göttingen , where he received his doctorate in 1957 under Ludwig Lendle . From 1970 to 1997 he was director of the Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Göttingen.

Hasselblatt is a pioneer in diabetology in Germany. In the 1950s he systematically investigated the blood sugar-lowering effect of sulfonylureas from the whole organism to the molecular effect on the islet cells of the pancreas. He completed his habilitation with a paper on the subject of "Investigations into the occurrence of bound insulin in serum and its activation by tolbutamide in vitro". Hasselblatt is an honorary member of the German Diabetes Society and the German Society for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology . Even after his retirement in 1997, Hasselblatt expanded the partnership between the University of Göttingen and the University of Tartu and was committed to promoting a lively scientific exchange between the two universities. He is co-author of numerous textbooks in pharmacology and toxicology.
