Sandra Vásquez de la Horra (* 1967 in Viña del Mar , Chile ) is a Chilean artist . She lives in Berlin .

Life

After studying visual communication from 1989 to 1994 at the University of Graphic Design in Viña Del Mar, she continued her studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . From 1995 to 1996 she studied with Jannis Kounellis and from 1996 to 2001 with Rosemarie Trockel . She then took part in a postgraduate program at the Art Academy for Media , Cologne , until 2003 .

Vásquez de la Horra mainly draws. She works with pencil and colored pencil on paper, often using utility paper. The works are given their characteristic final shape by dipping the marked leaves in wax. As wax pictures, they are translucent and object-like. The pictures seem strangely removed. This aesthetic reinforces the surreal content of the pictures. Vásquez de la Horra's motif repertoire includes memories of the Pinochet military junta in Chile, folk beliefs , superstitions and fairy tales . The artist combines traditions from the cultures of Latin America with those of Central Europe .
