German school award
The German School Prize is an award given by the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Heidehof Foundation together with the ARD and DIE ZEIT publishing group (formerly with the ZDF and the Stern magazine ) to schools with excellent pedagogical practice. For the evaluation, demanding criteria are used that see the school as a performance-oriented place, but also as a democratic place to live and learn.
The prize is awarded annually. Up to 15 schools are nominated for the award each year. The six winners will be announced at an award ceremony: The main prize is endowed with 100,000 euros, five other prizes with 25,000 euros each. For some years now, there have also been recognition prizes of 5,000 euros each for those schools that have been nominated but not awarded.
In 2006 and 2007, the prize was endowed with 50,000 euros for the main prize winner and 10,000 euros each for four other schools. Since the award ceremony in 2008, the endowment has been increased to 100,000 and 25,000 euros, respectively, and a “Prize of the Jury” and a “Prize of the Academy” are also endowed with 15,000 euros each. Since 2012 there has been no “Academy Prize”, but the prize money for the “Jury Prize” is 25,000 euros.
The prize was awarded for the first time in 2006. It has the highest ranking among education prizes in Germany. It is almost always awarded by the Federal President or the Federal Chancellor; the awards, which usually take place in Berlin, are broadcast on television (previously mostly on Phoenix ).
In 2015, the sponsors of the German School Prize launched the German School Academy and further developed the school prize themselves. In 2017, a school development program and a research program were added.
In addition to the main prize, five schools were awarded 25,000 euros in prize money in 2019 . The other nine schools from the final selection received consolation prizes of 5,000 euros each.
criteria
The six criteria of the German School Award, the so-called “quality areas”, have been defined on the basis of scientific research and practice of the award-winning schools and are constantly checked and updated. The quality areas have requirements in these areas.
- power
- Dealing with diversity
- Teaching quality
- responsibility
- School climate, school life and partners outside of school
- School as a learning institution
jury
The selection committees consist of a preliminary jury and a jury. Both bodies include experts from science, practice, administration and politics.
