The gymnasium of the town Alsdorf is a school in North Rhine-Westphalia Alsdorf . Around 60 teachers teach at the school; The headmaster is Wilfried Bock. Since the 2017/18 school year, the school has been located in the Culture and Education Center (KuBiZ) Alsdorf-Mitte.

history

The school was founded in 1914 as a "high school" in what was then the casino on Rathausstrasse. Shortly afterwards, the location changed to the hospital building "An der Mariensäule". But because of the First World War, the school had to move again because the building was needed to treat injured soldiers. The old police station on Cäcilienstraße served as the new location. In 1921 there was the first year of discharge, whose graduation from today's perspective equates to that of the “Mittlere Reife”. From 1924 the school was officially allowed to name itself as a grammar school. There was another move in 1930, namely to the old bread factory on Rathausstrasse. The school stayed there until 1961. The move to the newly constructed building on Theodor-Seipp-Straße in Ofden followed. This location served the school for a good 56 years. Since the 2017/2018 school year, the school has been located at its sixth location, the Johannes Rau Culture and Education Center, on the former site of the Anna mine . One of the most famous graduates is the former DFB president Egidius Braun .

Educational concept

The school uses Dalton pedagogy developed by Helen Parkhurst . All students study independently for two to three hours a day, and high school students can decide for themselves when to start their school day. In spring 2016, the school gained nationwide recognition through this regulation, which the media referred to as the “ flextime model ”.

The teacher's room concept is also used. Not the classes, but the teachers have fixed rooms.

Awards

In 2013, the Alsdorf high school was awarded the German School Prize awarded by the Robert Bosch Foundation for using the Dalton model . The school is also a reference school in the NRW future schools network .

The Gardeströpp

The Gardestöpp is a carnival session that was specially designed by the school community and first performed in 1970. The Prinzengarde of the city of Alsdorf has been sponsoring the meetings since 1971. Initially, two meetings per year were held, which has now been reduced to one event per year. From 1970 to 2002, the guard stoppers took place in the auditorium of the grammar school in Alsdorf-Ofden , and since 2003 in the Alsdorf town hall. Essentially, the Gardeströpp consists of performances and choreographies by students and teachers, with everyday school life and sometimes grievances being presented in a funny way. In the course of the sponsorship, the current prince couple also appears with their guard, which is one of the highlights of the meetings. This traditionally waives the students' first lesson on the following day, fat Thursday . The final, so it has emerged over the years, is contested by the respective Abitur class (grade Q2), which will be part of the Abitur preparations after Carnival.

Student Council

The student representation (SV) is a dedicated consisting of pupils body which the entire student body of the gymnasium the city Alsdorf represents. The SV is committed to school policy, organizes workshops , campaigns, events and helps when it is necessary. It also represents the students in the so-called school conference , where decisions about everyday school life are made. The student council of the Alsdorf high school has been voted one of the best SVs in Aachen several times because of its performance .

Ofden high school location

The former building at Theodor-Seipp-Straße 1 in Alsdorf-Ofden was the first site specially built for the school. The foundation stone was laid on April 30, 1959 and it was inaugurated in 1961. Due to the steadily increasing number of students, a smaller extension was added in 1962/63 and a larger one in 1973/74. From 1968 onwards it was called the "New language and mathematical-natural science high school Alsdorf". In the course of the reforms for the upper level, the school community reached a high of over 1,100 students around 1974. As a result, class pavilions were built on the area that was last used as a parking lot. Since January 1, 1974, the school has been transferred from the sponsorship of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia to the city, which is why it was given the name still used today, "Gymnasium der Stadt Alsdorf". At almost 56 years of age, it is the longest-running location of the high school. From 1961 to 2017, around 3,000 students completed their Abitur at the “Ofdener Gymnasium”. From November 2017 to May 2018 the building was gutted and demolished. The rubble, in shredded form, serves as the basis for the newly emerging residential area.

Culture and Education Center (KuBiZ)

At the beginning of the 2017/2018 school year, the grammar school moved into the new premises on Konrad-Adenauer-Allee. The building is shared with the Alsdorf secondary school, which has also moved from Ofden, and other smaller clubs. The new building complex consists on the one hand of the newly built main building, which houses most of the classrooms, the school administration on the third floors and the gyms in the basement. The outbuilding was originally an old building of the Anna mine, which was then located on the same property . This is the former power center, also called the long house. It was renovated and rebuilt for school operations. In this part of the KuBiZ there are the music rooms, further classrooms as well as a forum and a district restaurant, which is open not only to schoolchildren but also to citizens.
