Egidius Braun (born February 27, 1925 in Breinig (today a district of Stolberg in the Aachen city region )) is a former German football official and was President of the German Football Association from 1992 to 2001 . He was then appointed honorary president. In the same year Braun founded the "DFB-Stiftung Egidius Braun" , which among other things takes care of needy young people. Furthermore, the “Egidius Braun Prize” is awarded by the WDR .

Life

At the age of 13, Egidius Braun became a player at SV Breinig . In the Second World War , after graduating from high school in Alsdorf in 1943 , he was drafted into military service and was taken prisoner of war , from which he was released in 1946. After his return made Brown, the Law and Philosophy studied, with the company "Potato Brown" independently . On the side he played soccer in the first team of SV Breinig, whose chairmanship he took over from August 19, 1956 to February 20, 1959.

After commitment at the local level, Braun was elected President of the Mittelrhein Football Association and a member of the DFB Advisory Board on August 4, 1973 . On August 25 of the same year he became vice-president of the West German Football Association.

From 1983 to 1987 Braun was a member of the board of directors of 1. FC Köln . On his 60th birthday, February 27, 1985, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class. He received the Federal Cross of Merit with a star in 1997. In 1995 he was honored with the State's Order of Merit for his services to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

From 1977 to 1992 he was treasurer of the DFB. After another presidency in the Mittelrhein Football Association (1981, 1983, 1986 and 1992), Braun was elected the eighth president of the DFB on October 24, 1992. In the same year he also became a member of the Presidium of the National Olympic Committee . He held the office of president until April 28, 2001.

During the Soccer World Cup in Mexico in 1986, Braun visited a Mexican orphanage with some national players and, under the impression of misery, founded the Egidius Braun Foundation's Mexico Aid. Not only because of his charitable commitment, Braun received a lot of sympathy within the DFB , UEFA and the entire field of German football. Nevertheless, he was not spared problematic situations in public. Braun had to justify his solidarity with the criticized national coach Berti Vogts after the German national team left the 1994 World Cup in the USA . The "Bild" newspaper called on Vogts to resign. Two years later, national coach Vogts won the European championship. In 1998, the DFB president and the former international had Paul Breitner in a telephone call apparently already on his appointment as team principal agreed the national team; however, a few hours later Braun withdrew from this agreement. Braun justified this with the fact that Breitner did not respect the agreed confidentiality of the telephone call and reported it to third parties. Breitner, on the other hand, wanted to see the real cause of the nebulous process in the fact that Braun had meanwhile learned of critical remarks that he had previously made about the DFB President.

Egidius Braun was married to Marianne Braun for 70 years. The passionate tournament rider died on May 20, 2020 at the age of 91 in her hometown of Aachen. The couple has two sons. He is a hunter and a nature lover. Today the Alemannia follower lives in Aachen . He suffered a stroke on October 16, 2006 .
