Arnold Poll

Arnold Johann Poll (born September 14, 1925 in Gey ; † April 16, 2016 in Houverath ) was a German Roman Catholic priest . From 1980 to 2000 he was president of the children's ministry “Die Sternsinger”.

Life

Arnold Poll was drafted into the war at the age of eighteen and was a soldier on the Eastern Front from 1943 to 1945 . In 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Soviets and did not return from Siberia until 1949 . In 1950 he made up his Abitur and entered the Collegium Albertinum . After studying Catholic theology and philosophy in Bonn, Munich and Aachen, he was ordained a priest in 1956 . He was chaplain in St. Stephan in Krefeld (1956–1958) and in St. Peter in Hinsbeck on the Lower Rhine (1958–1966).

In 1966 he became pastor of St. Laurentius in Houverath , a district of Erkelenz , and regional pastor of the Erkelenz-Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg region, which is currently being established. From 1968 to 1984 he was their first regional dean and from 1970 to 1980 missio- diocesan director in the diocese of Aachen .

In 1980, Arnold Poll was appointed president of the children's ministry “Die Sternsinger” based in Aachen and was in charge of the caroling campaign in Germany. Under his leadership, the number of parishes taking part in the caroling event doubled. During his twenty years in office, the amount of donations rose from twelve million in 1979 to around 106 million Deutsche Mark in 1999. He initiated a partnership with the then President of the German Football Association (DFB) , Egidius Braun , to promote projects by the carol singers. With Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl , he arranged the annual reception of the carol singers by the Federal Chancellor in the Federal Chancellery , with Richard von Weizsäcker the annual reception of the carol singers by the Federal President . These actions continue to this day. From 1986 to 1991 he was a representative of the Catholic Church in the German Committee of UNICEF .

His association “Kinder in die Mitte eV” supports orphans, street children and sick children all over the world. He is the namesake and initiator of the "Prelate Arnold Poll Foundation". Because of his commitment to the carol singers, he is also known as the "father of the carol singers".

Arnold Poll was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land . In 1982 he was appointed Knight of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilien Cardinal de Fürstenberg and invested in Aachen Cathedral on December 11, 1982 by Bishop Franz Hengsbach , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . He was Commander of the Papal Lay Order.

On April 25, 2016, the exequies for the deceased priest were held in St. Laurentinus Houverath, held by his friend Albert Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith Patabendige Don , Archbishop of Colombo , Sri Lanka .

The city of Erkelenz remembered its deceased priest and honorary citizen in a special meeting of the city council in the old town hall. He was honored as a pastor who was “close to the people”, whom everyone just called “our pastor”.
