It has been organized since 1959 in Germany, the Sternsingen , also called "Action Epiphany singing" called, collect donations for the children and young people for children's charities around the world. The focus of the donation campaign in 2016 was the children's aid program Fundación Palliri in the Andean highlands of Bolivia .

history

The Children's Mission goes back to a French initiative of Bishop Charles-Auguste-Marie-Joseph de Forbin-Janson of Nancy (1785–1844), whose grandfathers Joseph Palamede de Forbin-Janson (1726–1809) and Karl Anton Hyacinth von Gallean (1737 –1778), are buried in the Heiliggeistkirche (Heidelberg) or in St. Sebastian (Mannheim) . In May 1843 he founded the children's aid organization Oeuvre de la Sainte Enfance (German: work of holy childhood ), the basic intention of which was for French children to pray for children in China and to stand up for them.

Auguste von Sartorius , a girl from Aachen , brought this idea to Germany and, after her first efforts met with rejection, finally founded the German Children's Mission on February 2nd ( Mariä Lichtmess ), based on the French model ( Mariä Lichtmess ), under the name Verein der Heilige Kindheit .

Already in 1856 the association was founded by Pope Pius IX. recognized as a church association and received a cardinal as protector . 66 years later, on May 3, 1922, Pope Pius XI. the Association of the Holy Childhood for the Papal Work with the name Päpstliches Missionswerk der Kinder in Deutschland .

During the Second World War, the work of the work of the Holy Childhood suffered from the restrictive legislation of the National Socialists . Simultaneous membership in National Socialist youth organizations and church associations was prohibited in 1933; the number of members decreased. The public collection of money was forbidden, the participation of teachers in church associations was prohibited and the work of the Holy Childhood was monitored by the Gestapo .

In October 1945 the work resumed its work and from 1949 published the magazines “Die Sternsinger” and “Heilige Kindheit - Schule und Mission”. Around January 6, 1959, the carol singers campaign or Dreikönigssingen campaign took place for the first time .
