The Erzbistum Colombo ( lat. : Archidioecesis Columbensis in Taprobane ) is in Sri Lanka preferred Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Colombo .

history

The Archdiocese of Colombo was founded on December 3, 1834 by Pope Gregory XVI. from cession of territory by the diocese of Cochin as the diocese of Ceylon . On February 17, 1845, the diocese of Ceylon was renamed the Diocese of Colombo .

On September 1, 1886, the Diocese of Colombo was by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Colombo became a metropolitan bishopric on June 7, 1887 . On December 6, 1944, the Archdiocese of Colombo changed its name to the Archdiocese of Colombo in Ceylon . The Archdiocese of Colombo in Ceylon was renamed the Archdiocese of Colombo on May 22, 1972 .
