Thomas Benjamin Cooray OMI (born December 28, 1901 in Periyamulla Negombo , Sri Lanka , † October 29, 1988 in Tewatta Ragama ) was Archbishop of Colombo and Cardinal .

Life

Thomas Benjamin Cooray studied in Colombo and Rome trays Catholic theology and philosophy . He joined the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and received on 23 June 1929 in Rome, the sacrament of Holy Orders . After further studies he worked from 1931 to 1945 as a parish chaplain in the Archdiocese of Colombo.

In 1945 Pope Pius XII appointed him . as coadjutor archbishop with succession rights for the Archdiocese of Colombo, whose shepherd he became in 1947, and titular archbishop of Preslavus . He was ordained bishop on March 7, 1946, by the Apostolic Delegate in India, Archbishop Leo Peter Kierkels ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Chilaw , Edmund Peiris , and Bernardo Regno OSB , Bishop of Kandy .

Thomas Benjamin Cooray attended the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 and was elected by Pope Paul VI on February 22, 1965 . as Cardinal Priest with the title Church Santi Nereo ed Achilleo in the Cardinal College added. In 1976 he resigned the leadership of the Archdiocese of Colombo for reasons of age.

Thomas Benjamin Cardinal Cooray died on October 29, 1988 in Tewatta Ragama and was buried in the crypt of the Basilica of Our Lady of Lanka there.

On October 29, 2010, Archbishop Albert Malcolm Ranjith opened the process of beatification for Thomas Benjamin Cooray.
