Nicholas Marcus Fernando

Nicholas Marcus Fernando (born December 6, 1932 in Munnakkara , † April 10, 2020 in Tewatta Ragama near Colombo ) was a Sri Lankan clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Colombo .

Life

Nicholas Marcus Fernando attended a Roman Catholic school in Munnakkara and St. Mary's College in Negombo . The Patriarch of Cilicia and Pro-Prefect of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide , Grégoire-Pierre XV. Cardinal Agagianian , ordained him on December 20, 1959 as a priest of the Archdiocese of Colombo in Ceylon . Among other things, he was rector of St. Aloysius Minor Seminary (1965–1973).

Pope Paul VI appointed him on March 21, 1977 Archbishop of Colombo. The retired Archbishop of Colombo, Thomas Benjamin Cardinal Cooray OMI , donated him episcopal ordination on May 14 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Anthony de Saram , Bishop of Galle , and Jacob Bastiampillai Deogupillai , Bishop of Jaffna .

In 1989 he was called to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples by Pope John Paul II . From 1989 to 1995 he was chairman of the Episcopal Conference of Sri Lanka.

On July 6, 2002, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation due to health reasons. He died in the "Emmaus House" near the Basilica of Our Lady of Lanka in Tewatta Ragama near Colombo.
