Oswald Thomas Colman Gomis ( Sinhalese ඔස්වල්ඩ් ගොමිස් Osvalḍ Gomis ; born December 12, 1932 in Kelaniya , Sri Lanka ) is retired Archbishop of Colombo .

Life

After finishing school at St. Joseph's College, he entered the seminary in 1950 . He was ordained a priest on February 3, 1958 and worked in the Catholic journalism of his country.

On July 17, 1968 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. Appointed Titular Bishop of Mulia and Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Colombo . In 1995 he was appointed bishop of the Anuradhapura diocese by Pope John Paul II ; In 2002 he was appointed Archbishop of Colombo.

On June 16, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI. He submitted his resignation due to reasons of age and appointed the previous Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments , Archbishop Albert Malcolm Ranjith , as his successor.

From 1998 to 2004 Gomis was chairman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Sri Lanka, 2001 to 2005 Gomis was general secretary of the FABC - Federation of Asian Bishop's Conferences. He has also been Chancellor of Colombo University since 2002 . He is the founder of numerous educational and social church initiatives.
