The Medal of Honor of the city of Leipzig is after the honorary citizenship of the second highest award that the city of Leipzig awards.

Award

The Medal of Honor has been awarded since 1997 to living people who have made a contribution to the common good and reputation of the city of Leipzig. This can have happened through extraordinary achievements in the scientific, economic, cultural, sporting, social, religious or political field.

At the suggestion of any natural or legal person, an association or other association, after a non-public preliminary discussion in the administrative committee, the city council decides in public with a two-thirds majority on the award of the medal. There are no financial contributions associated with the award. The number of living carriers of the medal should not exceed 25.

The medal

The circular medal is composed of strips of silver and serpentinite of various colors . Both materials played an important role in historic Saxon mining. On two of the silver elements, the medal shows the Leipzig city coat of arms and the words “Viribus unitis” (With united forces), which also adorn the ceiling of the council chamber of the New Town Hall .

The medal was designed by the Halle artist Ingrid Haufe.
