location

The settlement "Petershagen" probably originated in the middle of the 14th century. At that time, the place Salzgitter (today Salzgitter-Bad) with its saltworks was already protected by a palisade-reinforced wall with a ditch in front of it. The settlement was north of the ramparts in a narrow area between ramparts and the river Warne . This is the area south of the current Braunschweig-Kreiensen railway line and on both sides of Petershagener and Vorsalzer Straße. The settlement extended in a west / east direction from the row of potters behind today's Klesmerplatz to the Solte center at the train station. There were consistently only small plots of land here that did not include arable land. Mainly the salt boilers who came from Kniestedt and who worked in the saltworks settled here , later also craftsmen who worked on the saltworks.

history

When the settlement was built, there was no longer enough space within the ramparts of Salzgitter (-Bad), so that the first people settled outside the city along the road to Kniestedt. The settlement was called "Petershagen" and it was probably named after one of the first residents. The land belonged to Kniestedt and the settlers were obliged to pay annual interest. This tax consisted of a delivery of chickens or geese and was also called a smoky chicken . In the chronicle of the Lords of Kniestedt from 1792 it said: "Smokers must be given from every house where the smoke comes up." ( Franz Zobel : District of Goslar) When exactly Kniestedt was replaced and the community became independent is not handed down. A sales deed from 1733, in which the Kniestedt municipality sells land from the municipality, shows that the settlement still belonged to Kniestedt at that time and was not independent. Up until the 1880s, taxes had to be paid to the Kniestedter Church.

After the opposite settlement "Kniestedter Reihe" was built, the name "Vorsalz" became common for both settlements. This name is derived from its location "in front of the salt" outside the ramparts around the salt district. The name “Vorsalz” first appeared in the sales deed from 1733 and in a church book from 1739, until then “Petershagen” had always been mentioned. Only the new name was used in later documents. According to a fire cadastre of the community from 1766, 19 houses belonged to Vorsalz. Between 1884 and 1929 the post office for Salzgitter was operated in house no. 28 (today: Vorsalzer Straße 9, later a branch of the Volksbank). It wasn't until 1929 that the post office moved into its own building on what was then Schulstrasse (today: Altstadtweg). On April 1, 1926, Vorsalz was incorporated into Salzgitter (-Bad). At that time the community consisted of 28 houses.
