Franz Zobel (born December 29, 1889 in Lehrte , † May 24, 1963 in Salzgitter ) was a German city school councilor, cultural department head and local researcher. He was instrumental in setting up the Salder Castle Municipal Museum in Salzgitter.

Life

The Zobel, who comes from a miner's family, attended elementary and middle school in Lehrte. It followed from 1904 to 1907 at the Kgl. Preparatory school in Diepholz trained as a primary school teacher. Then Zobel attended the Kgl. Teachers' seminar in Northeim . After passing the state examination in 1910, he was employed as a teacher at the old town school in Salzgitter-Bad in 1911. The school service was interrupted by participation in the First World War in Infantry Regiment No. 74 . Zobel was discharged from military service due to an injury sustained in September 1914. He taught in Salzgitter until 1947, most recently as rector. In 1948 he was elected by the City Council of Salzgitter as City School Councilor and Head of Culture. He left the service in December 1954.

Even before he started teaching, Zobel did local history research. He took over the honorary posts of home keeper, nature conservation officer , archive keeper and supervisor of the soil antiquities for the Goslar district . Due to his membership in the Masonic Lodge Zur Bruderkette am Salzborn , which he co-founded in 1924 , these offices were withdrawn from him after 1933. Zobel was the initiator and chairman of the Aviation Association Bad Salzgitter and the surrounding area and co-founder of the local association Salzgitter of the Association of War Disabled . On July 24, 1924, a “Heimattag” took place in Salzgitter under Zobel's direction. In 1943 he took over the maintenance of the local homeland for Salzgitter again by being part of the cultural affairs department of the town of Salzgitter, which was founded in 1942, in charge of matters relating to local culture. After the end of the Second World War , Zobel helped to build up the cultural life of the young town of Salzgitter by initiating and promoting cultural associations. These included the Kulturkreis founded in 1946, the Association for Art and Science and the Salzgitter Orchestra Association.

After reaching the age limit, Zobel was commissioned in 1955 to set up a municipal museum, an archive and a local library in Salder Castle . He had compiled folklore and cultural history as early as the 1920s. The museum was officially opened on December 14, 1962. Zobel died in Salzgitter a few months after it opened in May 1963.

Honors

In 1960, Zobel was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class by President Friedrich August Knost . Franz-Zobel-Strasse in Salzgitter was named after him.
