The Order of the Aztec Eagle ( Spanish Orden del Águila Azteca ) is the highest order of merit awarded to foreigners in Mexico . It is not to be confused with the Imperial Order of the Mexican Eagle .

It was founded on December 29, 1933 by decree of President Abelardo Luján Rodríguez to honor foreigners for their services to Mexico or to humanity and corresponds to the honor of Mexican citizens by the Condecoración Miguel Hidalgo or the Medaglia Belisario Domínguez . The medal is awarded by the Cabinet of the Foreign Minister at the suggestion of a council headed by the President.

Order classes

The grades of the Order of the Aztec Eagle - which does not award a Grand Officer's Cross - are, in descending order:

  • MEX Order of the Aztec Eagle 1Class BAR.png Collane (span. Collar ) is reserved for heads of state,
  • MEX Order of the Aztec Eagle 2Class BAR.png Grand Cross , (span. Cruz ) is awarded to heads of government and prime ministers
  • MEX Order of the Aztec Eagle 3Class BAR.png Commander (span. Banda ) is given to ambassadors, ministers and state secretaries
  • MEX Order of the Aztec Eagle 4Class BAR.png Officer (span. Medalla ) is awarded to undersecretaries and envoys
  • MEX Order of the Aztec Eagle 5Class BAR.png Knight (span. Placa )

Furthermore decorations (span. Are venera ) and badges (span. Insignia ) awarded.

Carrier (selection)

Bundestag President Dr. Eugen Gerstenmaier received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Aztec Eagle from the hands of the Mexican Ambassador Alfonso Guerra in Bonn in 1960.
