education

Kushner graduated from the private Frisch School in Paramus , New Jersey , which is run in the tradition of modern Orthodox Judaism . According to research by business journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner Daniel Golden, Kushner was described by representatives of his high school as a moderate student. Nevertheless, Kushner was accepted at Harvard University , which is known for its rigorous admissions process . Previously, Kushner's father had donated $ 2.5 million to the elite university. Kushner completed his sociology studies in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He also completed a combined law and business administration degree with a Juris Doctor and Master’s degree (MBA) from New York University Law School in 2007 . Previously, his father had donated $ 3 million to New York University.

After graduating from NYU, Kushner completed internships with New York District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau and with the New York law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP .

Entrepreneurial career

From 2004 Kushner worked for the family-owned real estate empire and since then has been jointly responsible for billions in annual sales of the Kushner Companies . After his father Charles Kushner was sentenced to several years' imprisonment in 2005 for illegal campaign financing, tax evasion and unauthorized manipulation of witnesses, Jared Kushner took over the management of the company.

In January 2007, the then 26-year-old Jared Kushner made the most expensive purchase of a single real estate property in US history, in which he bought Tishman Speyer Properties the 41-story 666 Fifth Avenue office building in New York City for US $ 1.8 billion -Dollars bought. The purchase price was financed almost entirely through a loan from UBS and Barclays . Jared and his father Charles Kushner have their offices on the 15th floor of the 666 Fifth Avenue building. The real estate trust fund Vornado Realty Trust has been a partner in the property since 2011 . When Jared Kushner began working as sworn chief advisor to US President Donald Trump in January 2017, he transferred his shares in the building to a family-owned foundation in which he is not involved in business.

Jared Kushner and the Kushner Companies have been criticized for their business ties with Israeli billionaire Raz Steinmetz . Steinmetz is a nephew of the controversial diamond and real estate dealer Beny Steinmetz and has supported Kushner several times with loans totaling US $ 550 million for the purchase of New York real estate in prime locations. Critics point out possible political conflicts of interest because of the business connections of the Kushners and Steinmetz '. In 2017, too, Kushner's real estate company took out new million-dollar loans.

In May 2015, Jared Kushner bought Africa Israel Investments Ltd. for $ 295 million . the New York Times Square Building in Manhattan . According to the Wall Street Journal , Kushner's real estate deals totaled $ 14 billion. In December 2016, the Kushner Companies owned a total of 1.2 million square meters of rentable office space as well as 20,000 apartments in six US states under their CEO Jared Kushner , who has been operating since 2008.

In addition to numerous properties, Kushner also owns the Observer Media Group , a media company specializing in digital content . From 2006 he bought several print and online publications and initially accumulated them under the Observer Media Group , including the traditional newspaper The New York Observer, which is aimed at New York's upper class . The publications of the initially purchased print magazines Scooter , Scene and Yue were gradually discontinued. Instead, the online publications BetaBeat , Gallerist and Politicker were acquired or developed. A fundamental relaunch of the Observer Media publications took place in 2015/2016 . The loss-making print edition of the New York Observer was last published on November 9, 2016, one day after the US presidential election . Since then, The New York Observer , BetaBeat , Gallerist and Politicker have been combined into one online presence and appear in exclusively digital form at Observer.com .

Kushner holds (as of early 2017) an indirect stake in the venture capital company Thrive Capital of his brother Joshua. The company, which specializes in Internet and software companies, participates in more than 100 investments (as of early 2017), including stakes in the Instagram , Slack apps and the Stripe online payment platform . Campaign manager

Kushner was the leading campaign manager on the campaign team for Donald Trump's 2015/16 presidential campaign : He selected the venues and played a key role in Trump's travel plan. He also quietly developed and managed the fundraising and social media campaigns. For his digital online campaign, known as Project Alamo , he used his relationships with over 100 internet specialists and data analysts from Silicon Valley . He moved the digital nerve center of Trump's election campaign from Silicon Valley to San Antonio in the US state of Texas . With only US $ 100,000 election campaign costs per week, the Project Alamo team targeted the 12 to 14 million e-mail addresses of potential voters collected via the various social media channels. The former Google - CEO Eric Schmidt said shortly after the US presidential election, Kushner was the biggest surprise in the election campaign in his eyes.

Chief Advisor to the US President

After the presidential election, numerous media outlets wrote about Kushner: Kushner was discreet, loyal and clever; he is the most important advisor, gray eminence and puller of US President Trump. Kushner acts “informally and in the background. Hardly visible, with maximum influence ”. Kushner has been "the power center in Trump's political team" since June 2016. Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger called Kushner "Trump's most important confidante".

On January 20, 2017, Kushner was appointed official Senior Advisor to the President of the United States along with Trump's speechwriter Stephen Miller . Kushner announced through his attorney Jamie Gorelick that he would be leaving his company, selling "substantial assets" and staying out of government affairs that affected his financial interests.

White House Office of American Innovation

At the end of March 2017, it was announced that Jared Kushner was taking over the management of a new department of the White House (“White House Office for American Innovation”) that reports directly to US President Trump. The aim is to transfer ideas from the corporate sector to government work. Initially, this department will have the task of reorganizing the federal bureaucracy, reforming the supply of US war veterans, combating drug abuse and privatizing previous government tasks. Kushner said the government should function like a big American company. The new department is described as a special unit made up of former managers and tech greats from Silicon Valley such as Gary Cohn and Marc Benioff .

The portfolio of tasks transferred from President Donald Trump to Kushner included ending the opioid epidemic in the United States of America , reviewing the infrastructure , reforming the federal administration and resolving the Middle East conflict .

Special Envoy for the Middle East

Kushner was appointed as a special envoy to negotiate peace in the Middle East . At a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu , Trump said that this peace should be better “than you can ever imagine”.

Officer during the coronavirus pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic , he was responsible for the supply and brokerage of protective equipment in the White House alongside Minister of Health Alex Azar , the FEMA disaster management agency and Vice President Mike Pence .

Investigations into Russia contacts

Kushner, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin

In May 2017, it became known that Kushner had more contacts with Russian authorities than before from the White House during and after the 2016 election campaign, namely at least two phone calls with the Russian ambassador to the USA Sergei Kisljak and one more meeting with him. Since the beginning of 2017, these contacts have been part of the FBI's investigation into the suspected collusion of Trump's campaign team with Russian authorities , who intervened in the 2016 US presidential campaign using hacks and media manipulation . A spokeswoman for Kushner pointed out that he had made thousands of phone calls in the six months and did not remember these two phone calls. According to the Washington Post , Kisljak reported to Moscow in December 2016 that in a confidential conversation in Trump Tower while preparing for the transfer of power , Kushner had suggested a secret direct channel for Trump's team at the Russian embassy - also shielded by US authorities - for communication with the set up Russian government. Kisljak was alienated from this proposal. Since Kushner also held talks in Trump Tower in December 2016 with the (secret service trained) head of the state-owned Russian Wneschekonombank while he was trying to win potential investors for the major 666 Fifth Avenue project , there is suspicion of exploiting political power for business purposes. The bank is (as of May 2017) affected by sanctions against Russia due to the Crimean crisis and was involved in a New York espionage case in 2015. The White House and Bank statements on the content of the meeting diverged: the bank said the meeting took place with Kushner in his role as head of his family's company; the White House said the meeting was diplomatic and had nothing to do with Kushner's business. At the end of May, Democratic members of the US Congress wrote to Deutsche Bank boss John Cryan , referring to reports that the Trump companies owed Deutsche Bank a total of 340 million dollars (around 304 million euros). The Congress does not yet know whether these loans for Trump and his family were secured by guarantees from the Russian government "or were in any way connected with Russia". They also wrote to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to find out whether Russian officials, oligarchs or criminal gang leaders had a "financial lever" against Trump to put pressure on him and his government. In late June 2017, the Washington Post reported that a Deutsche Bank loan of $ 285 million to Kushner's real estate company was also being investigated shortly before the election; Deutsche Bank was being investigated for credit fraud and money laundering at the time . Kushner paid $ 296 million and also took out a $ 85 million loan from another company; so the borrowing was $ 74 million higher than the purchase price.

In July 2017 another meeting with Russian representatives on June 9, 2016 was Trump Tower known to the Kushner with the former campaign manager Paul Manafort 's oldest and Trump's son Donald Trump Jr. had participated. The previously exchanged e-mails show that Trump's son had organized the meeting with a Russian lawyer because she had promised him incriminating material about the opposing candidate Hillary Clinton . This is the first time that the closest election campaign team around Trump has had contact with Russia with collusive intent. On July 24, 2017, Kushner issued a statement and spoke non-publicly and not under oath with the Senate Intelligence Committee .

Conflicts of Interest

In early 2019, the Kushner Company (KC) has to refinance US $ 1.2 billion in loans that it had to take out because the 666 Fifth Avenue property that it bought could not be marketed as hoped and is partially vacant. Looking for investors, KC was also active in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, China, South Korea, France and Israel, according to Bloomberg. KC holds 50.5% of 666 Fifth Avenue, with Vornado Realty Trust holding the remaining 49.5%. Vornado announced in February 2018 that it would sell its stake soon. In the media and in public discourse, questions have been asked whether Kushner has made himself susceptible to influence or blackmail and whether he has always neatly separated the two spheres. According to the Washington Post , government officials in at least four countries (China, Mexico, Israel and the United Arab Emirates ) have discussed ways to "manipulate" Kushner.
In June 2018, it was revealed that the Kushners had revenue of approximately $ 147 million from 80 transactions in 2017. Ethics experts believe conflicts of interest are possible.

In July 2019 Donald Trump described the constituency of Elijah Cummings in Baltimore as "a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess" (translation: "a disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess "). He also drew attention to the conditions in Kushner's residential complexes, where fines of $ 13,200 have been imposed since 2017 for mold, rodent infestation and other defects. Of 899 housing units owned or owned by Kushner, 200 failed annual inspections. The animal welfare organization PETA responded with a billboard on which it placed a man (Kushner) sitting on a pile of money opposite a mouse with a piece of cheese.
