John Francis Kelly (born May 11, 1950 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American politician and former general of the United States Marine Corps . He was Chief of Staff of the White House under US President Donald Trump from July 31, 2017 to January 2, 2019 ; previously he served on 20 January 2017 already as Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States in the Cabinet Trump .

From November 19, 2012 until his retirement on January 14, 2016, Kelly served as Commander-in-Chief of the United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM), a cross -armed regional command of the US Forces based in Doral , Florida .

Education and career

Kelly grew up in the Boston borough of Brighton in an Irish Catholic family. Before he was 16 , he hitchhiked from his hometown on the east coast across the USA to Washington , the most northwestern US state, from where he started his way home as a freighthopper by train.

After completing school, Kelly signed up for a year with the US Merchant Navy before joining the Marine Corps in 1970, where he was sergeant in the reserve in 1972 after completing his training as a non-commissioned officer in the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina was released.

After completing his studies at the University of Massachusetts in 1976 and receiving an officer’s license through a study-accompanying program at the Officer Candidates School , he worked in various military positions, including as a platoon leader , again at Camp Lejeune, and on the aircraft carriers USS Forrestal and USS Independence . After training at the 'US Army Infantry School' in 1980, Kelly was now captain , from 1981 in the management of the headquarters of the Marine Corps in the Navy Office in Washington, DC , active before he was transported back to 1984 to the 2nd Marine Division. Kelly's further education included a Masters Degree in National Security Studies from the Georgetown School of Foreign Service (1984).

Kelly was promoted to brigadier general during a foreign assignment in Iraq in March 2003 and shortly thereafter took over command of the newly formed "Task Force Tripoli", whose task it was to secure the northern city of Tikrit after the fall of Baghdad .

He then served as assistant to the then commandant of the Marine Corps , Michael Hagee , before he was promoted to major general in July 2007 for one year in command of the " I Marine Expeditionary Force " in Al-Anbar , Iraq ; back in the United States , he commanded the "Marine Forces Reserve" and the "Marine Forces North" from 2009 to 2011. From March 2011 he was "Senior Military Assistant" in the Ministry of Defense , most recently in the rank of lieutenant general .

In July 2012, the Department of Defense announced that US President Barack Obama had nominated Kelly to succeed Air Force General Douglas Fraser at the helm of US Southern Command. Kelly finally took command on November 19, his promotion to general took place as part of the transfer of command.

On January 14, 2016, Kelly handed over control of the USSOUTHCOM to Admiral of the US Navy Kurt Tidd and officially retired on February 1.

Minister of Homeland Security

Kelly was nominated as the new Minister of Homeland Security by US President-elect Donald Trump on December 7, 2016, and was also sworn in on Trump's inauguration day , January 20, 2017. The US Senate had confirmed Kelly's nomination that morning with one abstention with 88-11 votes. Kelly was the fifth Secretary of Homeland Security since the establishment of the Ministry in 2002, while the one with the shortest term.

White House Chief of Staff

On July 28, 2017, US President Trump named Kelly his new Chief of Staff after his predecessor Reince Priebus had to vacate his post. Kelly took office on July 31st. Kelly, who is considered disciplined, initially ensured a stronger order and overview by restricting access to the president. During his tenure, however, little changed in the unpredictable behavior of the president; Instead, Kelly stood out for his right-wing conservative positions, for example on immigration, which he shared with Trump. Relations with the president deteriorated, and in the first half of 2018, the media began reporting that Kelly's influence was waning and that Trump was making decisions without consulting Kelly. On December 8, 2018, after weeks of speculation, Trump announced that Kelly would leave office at the end of the year. The previous director of the Office for Administration and Budget , John Michael Mulvaney , was appointed as his successor, who initially held the office on a provisional basis and then officially took it over at the beginning of 2019.

Private

John Kelly has been married to Karen Kelly, née Hernest, from Teaneck , New Jersey , since 1976 ; together they had three children, sons John and Robert and daughter Kathleen. Kelly's younger son, Robert, then a first lieutenant in the service of the Marine Corps, was killed by a land mine in 2010 at the age of 29 while on patrol in the Afghan city ​​of Sangin . John F. Kelly is the highest-ranking officer in the US armed forces who lost a son or daughter in the Afghanistan or Iraq war . His older son also serves as an officer in the Marine Corps.
