Michael W. Hagee

Michael W. Hagee (born December 1, 1944 ), a former general , was the 33rd Commandant of the US Marine Corps and in that position a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Forces . He was replaced by James T. Conway on November 13, 2006, two months before the regular end of his four-year term and retired on January 1, 2007.

Military career

Hagee graduated from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering with honors. He also holds a Masters of Science degree in Electromechanics from the US Naval Postgraduate School , a Masters of Arts degree from Naval War College in National Security and Strategy, and is a graduate of Command and Staff College.

In 1970, Hagee served as company commander of A Company , 1st Battalion of the 9th U.S. Marine Regiment. From 1970 to 1971 he was platoon leader of the A company and commanding officer of the headquarters and the support company of the 1st Battalion, 1st US Marine Regiment. In 1971 he was transferred to the 1st Marine Air Command and Control Squadron , where he served as a communications and electronics officer. From 1972 to 1974 he was assistant director of the telecommunications school. Then he took command of the Waikele-West Loch Guard Company from 1974 to 1976, to take command of the Pearl Harbor Guard Company for a year in 1976 . In 1977 he was then used as an instructor in the 3rd US Marine Division . From 1978 to 1981 he taught electrical engineering at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

In 1982 Hagee was transferred to the headquarters of the United States Marine Corps in Washington, DC , where he headed the planning department until 1986. From 1987 to 1988 he served as Assistant Chief of Staff G-1 , the 2nd U.S. Marine Division . In 1988 he was transferred to the 8th US Marine Regiment, where he served as first officer (XO) and later that year took command of the 1st Battalion until 1990. From 1990 to 1992, Hagee was director of the Humanities and Social Science Division of the Marine Corps Representation at the US Naval Academy. From 1992 to 1993 he was the commanding officer of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) (11thMEU / SOC) and liaison officer to the US Special Envoy for Somalia . Hagee then served as executive assistant to the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1993 to 1994, and then until 1995 as director of the Character Development Division at the US Naval Academy. Between 1995 and 1996 he was military advisor to the Vice Secretary of Defense in Washington, DC and executive assistant to the Director of Central Intelligence .

In 1996, Hagee assumed the post of Assistant Director of Operations at the US European Command Headquarters . In 1998 he took over as commanding general for one year in the 1st US Marine Division , since in 1999 he was again appointed director of strategy and planning at the US Pacific Command for one year . From 2000 to 2002 he took over as commanding general of the I. Marine Expeditionary Force in order to take over the post of Commandant of the Marine Corps on January 13th in 2003 . Two months before the regular end of his four-year term, Hagee was replaced by James T. Conway on November 13, 2006 and retired on January 1, 2007.

Hagee, a Texas German like Chester W. Nimitz , is married to Silke, the daughter of the German Brigadier General Werner Boie and father of two children.
