The base Marine Barracks Washington (also Marine Barracks, Washington, DC or Marine Barrack 8th and I ( 8th and I )) is the oldest base of the US Marine Corps (USMC), since 1806 the seat of the commandant and thus also the seat of the headquarters of the USMC. The base is located on 8th Street and Street I north of the Washington Navy Yard in the southeast quadrant in Washington, DC. The base was established in 1801.

history

The buildings of the Marine Barracks are among the oldest in Washington and are listed. When the British burned Washington in the British-American War of 1812, they also captured the barracks of the Marines they had defeated in the Battle of Bladensburg . In the traditional portrayal of the Marine Corps, however , they spared the facility out of respect for the courage the Marines had shown in this battle . Another possible explanation for the exemption is the intention of the British to use the barracks and the house of the commandant as a command post, but this could not be implemented before their departure.

Today, the Marine Barracks are surrounded by 8th and I streets and by 9th and G streets southeast and have been listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places since December 27, 1972 . On May 11, 1976, they were declared a National Historic Landmark .

Marines stationed in Washington must meet certain height and weight specifications because they are responsible for ceremonial duties such as honor escorts at funerals, honor guards, guarding the White House and the presidential mansion of the United States at Camp David, as well various parades. These take place every Tuesday evening and at other times at the United States Marine Corps War Memorial .
