Charles Chandler "Chuck" Krulak (born March 4, 1942 in Quantico , Virginia ) is a former general of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and was the 31st Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1995 until his retirement in 1999 .

Life

Krulak was born to Lieutenant General Victor H. Krulak , who fought in World War II , the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. After high school , he went to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis , where he graduated in 1964. He has also graduated from George Washington University since 1973 and from Naval War College since 1982 .

During the Vietnam War, Krulak was the commander of a platoon . After various other posts, he served as a company officer at the Naval Academy in Annapolis from 1970 to 1973 , before becoming chief of the 3rd Battalion of the 3rd US Marine Regiment of the 3rd US Marine Division from 1983 to 1985. In 1989 Krulak was used as assistant to the commander of the 2nd US Marine Division. After the end of the Second Gulf War in 1991, he was transferred to the headquarters of the US Marine Corps. After that, he served at Quantico before becoming Commanding General of the Pacific Marines in 1994. A year later he was promoted to general and appointed 31st Commandant of the Marine Corps.

He is married and has two sons.
