Robert B. Neller (born February 9, 1953 in East Lansing , Michigan ) is a general of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and since September 24, 2015 its commandant ( English Commandant of the Marine Corps , CMC for short ).

Education and career

Nellers education includes a Bachelor in History and Speech Communication from the University of Virginia and a Master's degree in Human Resource Management from Pepperdine University as well, further education and training in relevant institutions such as the NATO Defense College .

Service in the rank of general

In Operation Iraqi Freedom, which began in 2003 during the Iraq war , Neller was involved as deputy commanding general of the I. Marine Expeditionary Force . This was followed by assignments in the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe of NATO in Mons , Belgium , as President of the Marine Corps University at Marine Corps Base Quantico (2009/10) and as Director of Operations (J-3) in the United General Staff of the US Armed Forces . Most recently, he served from July 2014 to September 2015 as the commander of Marine Corps Forces Central at US Central Command , a cross -armed regional command of the US armed forces.

On July 16, 2015, the US Department of Defense announced the nomination of Neller as the new Commandant of the Marine Corps. Confirmed by the Senate , Neller then took over command on September 24th from Joseph Dunford , who in turn assumed the position of Chairman of the Joint Joint Chiefs of Staff, his promotion to general took place as part of the transfer of command.

Neller has been the 37th Commandant of the Marine Corps since it was set up in 1775.
