Navy Unit Commendation

The Navy Unit Commendation is a United States Navy award . It is awarded to ship crews who have rendered service during a combat operation .

It was donated during the Second World War on December 18, 1944 by the Secretary of the Navy (SecNav) James V. Forrestal with retroactive effect to December 6, 1941.

The ribbon can be awarded by the Secretary of the Navy to any ship , aircraft or unit that has distinguished itself directly or indirectly in combat operations. Foreign armed forces are also taken into account.

The award is given for a specific combat operation and can only be worn by persons who were on the vehicle or in the unit at the time.
