The Vietnam Service Medal is a military award of the US forces that at the direction of President Lyndon B. Johnson was introduced on 8 July 1965 and intended for soldiers in the Vietnam War were involved in 1961 and 30 April 1975 between November 15 . In addition, soldiers who served in Thailand , Laos or Cambodia and were in connection with the Vietnam War were also intended for this award.

The design of the order comes from Thomas Hudson Jones, a former employee of the US Army Institute of Heraldry.

The award was given to members of the US armed forces who performed their service in the territories of the war and its territorial waters . In order to receive this award, a soldier had to serve at least 30 consecutive days or a total of at least 60 days in the prescribed area.

Multiple awards are marked with a service star.

The Republic of Vietnam issued its own medal, which was given to foreign soldiers.
