FiveThirtyEight (also: 538 , after the number of electors in Electoral College ) is an American news website with a focus on statistics and data journalism . In addition to articles and podcasts, FiveThirtyEight offers probabilistic predictions of elections and sports results. The editor-in-chief is statistician Nate Silver .

FiveThirtyEight was founded by Silver in March 2008. From August 2010 to July 2013, it was integrated as a blog into the online presence of the New York Times . After the purchase by the sports channel ESPN , FiveThirtyEight was again an independent website on March 17, 2014. In 2018 it was resold to ABC News . Both channels belong to Disney .

According to its own information, FiveThirtyEight evaluated various surveys for the prediction of the American presidential elections in 2016 according to their quality and aggregated them into three probabilities. On the one hand, an assessment of the current status and a forecast of the election results, which will be aligned on election day, and on the other hand, an election forecast taking into account the economic situation. The procedure for other elections is similar.

In 2008 and 2009 FiveThirtyEight won a bloggie for “best political coverage” and “best blog about politics”. In 2012 and 2013 it was honored with a Webby Award for “Best Political Blog”.
