William Hamilton McWhorter Jordan (born September 21, 1944 in Charlotte , North Carolina , † May 20, 2008 in Atlanta , Georgia ) was a political advisor in the United States and tennis official .

Life

Jordan was born in North Carolina but grew up in Albany , Georgia. In 1967 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Georgia . Due to health restrictions, Jordan could not do military service, but worked as a civilian helper in refugee care during the Vietnam War .

Jordan was Chief of Staff of the White House from 1979 to 1980 under President Jimmy Carter . The post had previously been vacant since 1977 because Carter had seen no need to officially appoint a member of his staff. In 1986, Jordan ran in Georgia for the Democratic Party's nomination for the US Senate elections , but was defeated by Wyche Fowler . After his political career, he held the office of CEO of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) in 1988 .

He died of mesothelioma in May 2008 .
