Denis R. McDonough (born December 2, 1969 in Stillwater , Minnesota ) is an American foreign policy expert and was foreign policy advisor to the US administration under President Obama , in which he served as Deputy National Security Advisor . He was also the 26th Chief of Staff of the White House from January 2013 to January 2017 .

Youth and education

McDonough was raised Catholic as one of eleven children of the married couple William and Kathleen McDonough . In his youth, McDonough attended Saint John's University in Collegeville , where he played as safety on the Johnnies football team from Hall of Fame coach John Gagliardi . In 1992 he completed his undergraduate studies in history with the top grade summa cum laude and also earned a degree in Spanish . After graduating, McDonough traveled through Latin America for some time and taught, among other things, at a high school in Belize . He then began his majoring at Georgetown University , where he was awarded a Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) in 1996 by the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.

Professional background

From 1996 to 1999, McDonough served as an assistant to the House International Relations Committee , where he focused on his specialty Latin America. Then McDonough served Senator Tom Daschle from South Dakota as foreign policy advisor, but became legislative director of newly elected Senator Ken Salazar from Colorado after Daschle's re-election defeat in 2004 . Later in 2004, McDonough was a Senior Fellow at the Progressive Think Tank Center for American Progress . As a result of the reactivation of Senator Barack Obama's top foreign policy advisor, US Navy Reservist Mark Lippert , this McDonough recruited as a representative during his deployment in the Iraq war . This collaboration continued during Obama's election campaign for the 2008 US presidential election .

After Obama's election, McDonough joined the government as chairman of the National Security Council's strategic communications department , where he also served as chief of staff.

On October 22, 2010, President Obama announced that McDonough would replace Thomas E. Donilon as Deputy National Security Advisor , who was leaving the post to replace General James L. Jones as National Security Advisor. McDonough was present in the Situation Room of the White House during the US Navy Seals military operation that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden in May 2011 , and was also seen in the famous accompanying photo . On January 25, 2013, President Obama finally named McDonough Chief of Staff of the White House after the previous holder of the post, Jack Lew , was nominated by Obama as Secretary of the Treasury on January 10, 2013 .
