Stillwater is a city in the US state of Minnesota with around 15,000 inhabitants. It is the administrative seat of Washington County and belongs to the metropolitan area around the cities of Minneapolis-Saint Paul .
geography
Stillwater is around 15 miles northeast of Saint Paul . The St. Croix River runs east of the city . This is also the border with the state of Wisconsin . According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is 18.9 square kilometers, of which 2.1 square kilometers are water.
history
Two agreements between the US government and the Indian tribes of the Ojibwa and Dakota , which had been signed on July 29 and September 29, 1837, provided the basis for the settlement of the St. Croix River Valley by immigrants of European descent. Stillwater was founded in 1843 as one of the first Minnesota cities. In 1848 negotiations about the establishment of the state of Minnesota took place there. For this reason, Stillwater is also known as " The Birthplace of Minnesota ". After a year later Minnesota Territory was founded, which was 1853 in Stillwater Territorial Prison of Minnesota opened. Stillwater received its town charter on March 4, 1854. In the second half of the 19th century, the forest and timber industry was the town's most important economic factor.
Today Stillwater is a popular destination for tourists. The historic city center with bookshops, antique shops and restaurants as well as the location on the St. Croix River are of particular importance. Since 1993 the city has called itself a book village . In 1982, Oak Park Heights Detention Center opened just outside of Stillwater city center and is currently home to Minnesota's most dangerous criminals.
