Alfred Dedreux: The Hunter

Alfred Dedreux (born May 23, 1810 in Paris ; † March 5, 1860 there ; actually Pierre de Dreux ) was a French painter . Known above all for his horse motifs, the artist was one of the successful painters at the Paris Salon in the first half of the 19th century and later worked for the court of Emperor Napoléon III.

Life

Alfred Dedreux was born in Paris in 1810 as the son of the architect and later Prix de Rome winner Pierre-Anne Dedreux . In addition to the painter Pierre-Joseph Dedreux , an uncle of the artist, the painter Louise Marie Becq de Fouquières , a sister of Alfred Dedreux, was part of the artistically talented family circle . In 1817 Alfred Dedreux visited their father, who was in Rome, together with his mother and younger sister Thérèse-Elisabeth. The family stayed here until 1819 and then returned to Paris.

In addition to the painting relatives, the young Alfred Dedreux was primarily influenced by Théodore Géricault , a close friend of the family. At the age of thirteen, Alfred Dedreux was already working on the drawing Un maquignon , which is now in the Louvre , and which goes back in part to Géricault's work Cheval Cauchois . In 1818 Géricault painted the young Alfred together with his sister Élisabeth. The now lost early work Mazeppa , a monumental oil painting that Dedreux created at the age of 15, can also be traced back to Géricault . He received his training as a painter first from his uncle and later from Léon Cogniet .

After his training, Dedreux specialized mainly in the representation of horses. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1831 with the paintings Cheval sautant un fossé and Intérieur d'écurie . Until 1859 he regularly exhibited pictures in the salon, which were very successful there. He was awarded a medal of honor there in 1834, 1844 and 1848. In addition to equestrian scenes such as La Course au baiser and equestrian portraits such as Le duc d'Orléans , he occasionally also worked on historical pictures , such as the martyrdom of St. Hippolytus or the Bataille de Baugé , which he showed in the salon in 1839. During the reign of King Louis Philippe , Alfred Dedreux asked the audience not only to depict English thoroughbreds, but also to motifs such as bulldogs, greyhounds and carriages.

After the revolution of 1848 Dedreux stayed for some time in London, where he met his painter friends Eugène Louis Lami and Pierre Gavarni . It wasn't until 1852, the year of Napoléon III's coronation . to the French emperor, Dedreux returned to Paris. He received several commissions for equestrian portraits from the imperial couple. During this time he also worked on various pictures with equestrian motifs. In 1856 he was commissioned by the French state to paint Le Combat de cavalerie d'Eupatoria , which is now considered lost. In 1857 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor . Dedreux also worked as a copperplate engraver and had lithographs made of some of his works.

The exact cause of death of the artist is unclear. Immediately after the artist's death , the art historian Charles Blanc claimed that he died in a fall from a horse. In 1865 Blanc withdrew this statement and now spoke of death by a duel.
