Eugène Louis Lami (born January 12, 1800 in Paris , † December 19, 1890 there ) was a French painter .

Lami was a student in the studios of Antoine-Jean Gros and Horace Vernet and, with their support, was later able to attend the École des Beaux-Arts . After completing his studies there, Lami became a tutor for some time and taught some of the Princes of Orléans in watercolor painting .

He made several extensive study trips through almost all of Europe. In 1854 Lami stayed in Crimea , where he was an eyewitness to the Crimean War and where he painted several pictures. Another important journey took him to England and Scotland for several years.

Lami was made a Knight in 1837 and an Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1863 .

While in Lami's early works a. a. Lithographs dominated, he later switched mainly to oil painting . Most of his watercolors were created on his travels.
He found his subjects in the everyday life of higher society and in the history of the country or the area he was currently traveling. He was also often inspired by Alfred de Musset's works.
