Hastings is a city in the US state of Minnesota and the seat of the county seat of Dakota County , in which most of the place is located. Part of it protrudes into Washington County, however. In 2010 it had 22,172 inhabitants. The city was named after the first elected governor of the state of Minnesota, Henry Hastings Sibley .
Hastings is located at the confluence of the St. Croix River with the Mississippi River . As the administrative seat of Dakota County , most of the metropolitan area is in that county, with a small portion extending into Washington County .
history
The Hastings area was first settled by a military force deployed from Fort Snelling to guard a stuck supply in the winter of 1820. A Lieutenant William G. Oliver camped in what would later become known as Oliver's Grove. Under the Treaty of Mendota in 1851, which made the area available for white settlement, the area was surveyed and entered as a town in the land register in 1857, four years after the state of Minnesota became part of the union. In the same year Hastings was designated the County Seat de Dakota County. The name "Hastings" was drawn from suggestions made by four original settlers, who later became the governor.
Hastings owns the second oldest existing courthouse in the state of Minnesota after Stillwater . It was completed in 1871, the then construction costs amounted to 63,000 US dollars . The county government gradually moved to a new building from 1974 to 1989 and the City of Hastings acquired the old building. The building has been used as a town hall since 1993 .
The " Spiral Bridge " over the Mississippi River was built in 1895. The unusual design of the bridge was chosen to slow down horse-drawn vehicle traffic when entering the city center. The building became a tourist attraction, but was demolished in 1951 because it no longer corresponded to the size and weight of modern vehicles and a new high bridge was built.
In 1930 the Army Corps of Engineers completed construction of the first chamber of a lock at Hastings, Lock and Dam No. 2 , which is part of the lock system on the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St. Louis and which facilitates navigation on this stretch of the river.
The Fasbender Clinic designed by Frank Lloyd Wright is a local landmark .
Hastings and the nearby township of Nininger were the scene of extraordinary land speculation in the mid-19th century when Ignatius Donnelly named the area as a possible "new Chicago" . However, the economic crisis of 1857 put an end to this dream.
geography
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 28.5 square kilometers, of which 2.3 square kilometers are water. The Mississippi River forms most of the northern boundary of the metropolitan area, while the Vermillion River flows through the southern urban areas. The latter flows over a waterfall near a grain silo from ConAgra . Two small lakes lie within Hastings, Lake Rebecca and Lake Isabelle , which both drain into the Mississippi. The northeast of the urban area is known as "The Bottoms" and is uninhabited alluvial land and floodplain for the two rivers.
Demographic data
The United States Census 2000 counted 18,204 residents in 6642 households and 4722 families in Hastings. The population density was 694.5 inhabitants / km². The number of residential units was 6758, which corresponds to a density of 257.8 apartments / km².
The inhabitants passed in 2000 to 97.16% of White , 0.43% African American , 0.38% Native American , 0.64% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 0.36% from other races , and 0.99% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population stated in the census to be Hispanic or Latinos .
Children under the age of 18 lived in 37.4% of households and married couples lived together in 56.8% of households, 10.6% of households had a female head without a husband present, and 28.9% of households were non-families. 22.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 people and the average family consisted of 3.13 people.
Of the population, 27.3% were less than 18 years old, 8.9% were in the 18 to 24 age group, 30.6% were between 25 and 44 years old and 21.5% were between 45 and 64 years old. 11.7% were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 women there were 99.8 men; for every 100 women over 18, there were 97.7 men.
The average income per household was 53,145 US $ and the median family income was 61,093 US $. The men had an average income of $ 41,267 compared to $ 27,973 for women. The per capita income was US $ 22,075. About 2.1% of families and 4.9% of the population are below the poverty line ; this affected 3.4% of those under 18 years of age and 9.8% of those aged 65 or over.

The busiest street in Hastings is US Highway 61 , which in Hastings is named Vermillion Street . Highway 61 is a four-lane thoroughfare that cuts through the east of the city in a north-south direction. If you follow the highway to the north, you come to the Mississippi River to Cottage Grove and finally to St. Paul , to the south we come to Red Wing .
The other major road in Hastings is Minnesota State Route 55 , which runs in an east-west direction. Route 55 is also four lanes and runs through the center of town where it intersects with Highway 61. Highway 55 is mainly used by commuters towards Eagan and on to Minneapolis .
Minnesota State Route 316 is a ten-mile highway that begins south of Hastings on Route 61 and heads southeast. Its function is that of a shortcut between two points on Highway 61.
Minnesota State Route 291 is a short, two-kilometer highway in the east of the city.
Other roads that lead into the city are Dakota County Roads 42 (to the northwest), 46 (to the southwest), 47 (to the southwest), and 54 (to the east).
Hastings is not served by the MTC bus network. However, there are preliminary studies to run through a regional train to Hastings. The trains of Amtrak drive through, but do not last in Hastings, so any passengers have to go either to St. Paul in the north or in the south of Red Wing to zuzusteigen.
The Mississippi River is heavily used by shipping and there is a lock to the northwest of Hastings . There are several moorings on the shore for private motor boats.
