Fort Snelling (also known as Fort St. Anthony or Fort Saint Anthony ) is a former military fort at the confluence of the Minnesota River and the Mississippi River near Minneapolis , Minnesota . Today the former military post is a museum village .
The fort was originally built between 1819 and 1825 as Fort St. Anthony . It was later renamed Fort Snelling in honor of Colonel Josiah Snelling . Due to the geographical location, shipping traffic on the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers could be monitored. In addition, a good infrastructure was built around the fort. In the following years, in addition to different settlers and different cultures, a large number of companies settled in and transformed the area into a pulsating commercial center in the northwestern United States . In the years 1828/29, the future American President Zachary Taylor was the fortress commander. At that time the fort had a crew of almost 140 men.
During the Civil War , the fort served as an education and training base for thousands of Union Army soldiers . At the end of the 19th century, large parts of the base were modernized and renewed. The fort was last used during World War II when it served as a training facility for over 300,000 recruits. After the end of the war, the fort was also closed and converted into an administrative center for the veterans .
Today is on a part of the area a National Cemetery , the Fort Snelling National Cemetery , were buried in the more than 160,000 people. It was built in the 19th century and expanded after the fort was closed. In the meantime there is a museum village on the site with partly rebuilt buildings and facilities.
Fort Snelling was listed as a National Historic Landmark on December 19, 1960 , and was listed on October 15, 1966 by the National Register of Historic Places with number 66000401.

- From January 1820, weather data was continuously recorded at the fort. Thus, the Twin Cities region has one of the best weather records in the United States.
- The Minneapolis-Saint Paul airport is located in close proximity to the historic Fort Snelling.
