The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport ( IATA : MSP , ICAO : KMSP , MSP for short ) is an airport in the metropolitan area of the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in the US state of Minnesota . The terminals are in close proximity to the Mall of America .

The airport is also used as a Minneapolis – Saint Paul Joint Air Reserve Station by the Minnesota Air National Guard and the United States Air Force .

Location and transport links

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is seven miles south of downtown Minneapolis and seven miles southwest of downtown Saint Paul. Geographically, most of the airport is in the Fort Snelling census district and a small part of it is in southern Minneapolis.

The Lindbergh Terminal has its own interchange on Minnesota State Route 5 , which is east of the airport. The smaller Humphrey Terminal has a junction south of the airport on Interstate 494 , which at this point shares the route with Minnesota State Route 5. Minnesota State Route 62 runs north of the airport and Minnesota State Route 77 runs west .

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport will be integrated into local public transport by buses and a light rail . Metro Transit's 54 bus route regularly connects it to Saint Paul city center. The airport is connected to downtown Minneapolis by the Metro Blue Line , also operated by Metro Transit.

history

AirportTram

The origins of Minneapolis-St. Paul is lying in a racetrack that has been converted into an airfield. This was named Speedway Field . In 1923 it was renamed Wold-Chamberlain Field in memory of the two World War I pilots, Ernest Groves Wold and Cyrus Foss Chamberlain . In 1944 he was first named Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Airport / Wold-Chamberlain Field , shortly afterwards the "Metropolitan" was replaced by "International".

Airport facilities

Airport diagram

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport covers an area of 1,186 hectares.

Runways

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport has four runways , two of which run parallel. The runway 12R / 30L is 3,048 meters long and 61 meters wide, while the runway 12L / 30R is 2,499 meters long and 46 meters wide. The longest, however, is the runway 04/22 with a length of 3355 meters and a width of 46 meters. The shortest runway is marked 17/35, is 2438 meters long and 46 meters wide. It was only put into operation in 2005. All runways are covered with concrete.

Terminals

Minneapolis-St. Paul has two terminals: on the one hand Terminal 1-Lindbergh (formerly Lindbergh Terminal, after Charles Lindbergh ) and the much smaller Terminal 2-Humphrey (formerly Humphrey Terminal, after Hubert H. Humphrey ). Two people movers are in operation to transport passengers within the airport .

Terminal 1-Lindbergh

Terminal 1-Lindbergh consists of Concourses A to G with a total of 104 or 114 piers. Around 88 percent of departing passengers were handled here in 2018. The first groundbreaking took place on October 26, 1958, the opening of the original terminal took place on January 13, 1962. Terminal 1 is used by Aer Lingus , Air Canada , Air Choice One , Air France , Alaska Airlines , American Airlines , Boutique Air , Delta Air Lines , Frontier Airlines , KLM Royal Dutch Airlines , Spirit Airlines and United Airlines .

Terminal 2-Humphrey

Terminal 2-Humphrey consists exclusively of Concourse H with 14 gates. Since it is significantly smaller than Terminal 1, it only had a share of twelve percent of departing passengers in 2018. A Hubert H. Humphrey International Charter Terminal already existed from 1986. This has meanwhile been replaced by a new Humphrey Terminal, which opened in May 2001 with eight gates. In December 2004 two more gates were opened. The last renovation was completed in October 2016, including the opening of four new gates. Terminal 2 is used by Condor , Icelandair , Jetblue Airways , Southwest Airlines and Sun Country Airlines .

military

To the north of the airport is the Minneapolis – Saint Paul Joint Air Reserve Station, which is used by both the Air Force Reserve Command of the United States Air Force and the Minnesota Air National Guard . The Air Force Reserve Command uses the apron west of runway 04/22, while the Minnesota Air National Guard apron is east of runway 04/22. The 934th Airlift Wing, which is equipped with Lockheed C-130H Hercules , is stationed on the premises of the Air Force Reserve Command . The Minnesota Air National Guard's 133rd Airlift Wing also uses the Lockheed C-130H Hercules.

Expansion of the airport

In the last few years (as of 2007) the airport has been massively expanded. The terminals were enlarged in order to cope with the increased number of passengers. Above all, the then Northwest Airlines , which had its headquarters not far from the airport in Eagan and Minneapolis-St. Paul used it as an international hub , pushed for an expansion. A suggestion by the airline to relocate the airport out of the city to the surrounding region was rejected. Instead, the airport should be further expanded under the MSP 2020 Vision program . These measures included (as of 2007):

  • to expand the Humphrey Terminal to 22 gates,
  • a new car park at the Humphrey Terminal,
  • exclusive use of the Lindbergh Terminal by Northwest (now Delta) and other SkyTeam airlines and
  • the extension of the Lindbergh Terminal by another terminal hall.

Airlines and Destinations

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is one of Delta Air Lines' hubs . It is the home airport of the low-cost airline Sun Country Airlines , and until it ceased operations as a result of the merger with Delta Air Lines, it also held this position for Northwest Airlines . In total, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is used by 17 airlines . Delta Air Lines, including Delta Connection, has the largest share of the passenger market with 71.65 percent, followed by Sun Country Airlines with 6.29 percent, American Airlines including American Eagle with 5.77 percent, Southwest Airlines with 5.22 percent, United Airlines including United Express with 4.31 percent and Spirit Airlines with 3.04 percent.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport has direct flights to 136 domestic and 27 international destinations. The only destination in the German-speaking area is Frankfurt am Main , but Condor only flies to it seasonally .
