United Express is an umbrella brand under which US regional airlines franchise regional and feeder flights for United Airlines . They connect the United Airlines hubs with numerous destinations in the USA and Canada , with United Airlines determining the routes to be flown, the number of flight frequencies and ticket prices.

history

On May 1, 1985, United Airlines officially partnered with Air Wisconsin , Aspen Airways and Westair as United Express, which served feeder flights to United's hubs at Chicago O'Hare International Airport , Denver Stapleton International Airport and San Francisco International Airport .

In 1988, Presidential Airways became a United Express member and served the Washington Dulles International Airport hub , but soon failed. As a result, this hub was then served by a new, eastern division of Westair, which in turn was spun off in 1991 as Atlantic Coast Airlines (ACA).

Great Lakes Airlines became the next United Express partner in 1992, followed by Trans States Airlines the following year. When Los Angeles International Airport became a United hub in 1997 , it was served by the new partner SkyWest Airlines .

In 1993, the United Feeder Service began with Trans States Airlines , which connects the Chicago O'Hare hub with the Midwest , at that time with a BAe ATP fleet.

Great Lakes Airlines ended the United Express partnership in 2001, but still operates code-sharing with United Airlines on some flights . When United filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2002 , the United Express partners were put under cost pressure.

In 2004, the Atlantic Coast Airlines canceled their contract and became the low-cost airline Independence Air . In the following year Air Wisconsin lost its partnership and is now partially handling ground handling for United Express. In order to replace the flights that were canceled as a result, Colgan Air , GoJet Airlines and Shuttle America also became United Express partners.

In 2005 United announced that the service quality would be improved on important United Express routes under the name ExPlus. There is first class on routes with ExPlus service and meals in the larger aircraft such as the Embraer 170 and the Bombardier CRJ700 . By expanding United Express's role as a regional partner, United began operating ExPlus-equipped aircraft instead of or in conjunction with medium-haul aircraft on metropolitan routes such as Chicago-Houston.

In September 2010, SkyWest, Inc. announced the merger of Atlantic Southeast Airlines and ExpressJet , which made Atlantic Southeast Airlines the largest of the United Express partners.

On October 1, 2010, UAL Corporation and Continental Airlines merged to form United Continental Holdings , the new holding company for United Airlines. As a result of the merger, the regional partners of Continental Airlines, Continental Connection and Continental Express were also taken over by United Express. This increased the number of partners and the number of fleets rose to over 550 aircraft. The first aircraft to be painted in the new United Express livery was an Embraer ERJ 145 from ExpressJet Airlines. By 2016 the fleet was reduced to 480 machines.

In February 2017, United Airlines announced that the former United Express partner Air Wisconsin would be operating United Express flights again from autumn 2017 and, after the contract with American Airlines ended in March 2018, exclusively under the United Express brand name with stations at Chicago and Washington airports , DC will act.
