Independence Air was an American airline.

history

Under the name Atlantic Coast Airlines , it began operations on December 15, 1989 as a regional partner of United Airlines and carried out feeder flights for these. From 1999, Delta Airlines was added as a second pillar .

In November 2005, the parent company Flyi Corp. as part of the Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. However, the change in business model had already been worked out beforehand and in summer 2004 the company repositioned itself as a low-cost airline under the name Independence Air. Flight operations began on June 16, 2004.

Initially, the existing Canadair regional jets were used. Since their seat costs per flight mile were around a factor of 4 higher than those of the established LCC competition, an attempt was made to quickly change the fleet and in 2005 some Airbus A319 aircraft were procured . However, the losses incurred could not be compensated. For this reason, bankruptcy protection was applied for in November 2005 and operations were ceased in several stages by January 5, 2006. The planes were returned to the lessors and other assets were auctioned. For example, B. Northwest Airlines the operating license and wanted to set up a new feeder airline on this basis.
