Mesa Airlines, Inc. is a US regional airline based in Phoenix . It is a subsidiary of the Mesa Air Group and flies under the umbrella brands United Express for United Airlines and American Eagle for American Airlines . It used to fly for US Airways as US Airways Express and under the go! ; this own operation was discontinued in March 2014.

history

The origin of the company is the Mesa Air Shuttle, founded in 1980 by Larry and Jane Risley as the flight division of JB Aviation . Flight operations began in 1982 with a Piper Chieftain between Farmington and Albuquerque. Over the next five years the company established itself in New Mexico and expanded Albuquerque into a hub. Within 10 years the company developed into an airline with 38 aircraft and served 63 cities.

In 1989 Mesa went public as Mesa Airgroup and in the same year expanded its route network through a code share agreement with Midwest Express to include flights from Milwaukee. With the acquisition of Aspen Airways in 1990 and the codeshare agreement with United Airlines, which was taken over by the acquisition, flights were taken as United Express from Denver. Through further acquisitions of Air Midwest and WestAir, Mesa received further codeshares with US Airways and United and flew routes in California and the northwest of the Pacific coast under the name United Express. A further expansion followed in 1991 with the establishment of the Florida Golf Division with codeshare flights for US Airways from Tampa, Florida and with a codeshare agreement with America West . By 1995, 95% of Mesa Airlines' flights were codeshared for United Airlines , US Airways and America West.

A setback occurred in 1997 when United did not renew the codeshare agreement and the subsequent independent flights in Texas proved to be unprofitable. A new management team negotiated a new codeshare agreement with American West and relocated its headquarters from Farmington to Phoenix. At the end of 1998 the company flew 24 CRJ200s, 12 DHC-8s and 79 Beech 1900Ds.

After Mesa was back in the black, the company wanted to expand again and in 1999 took over the Charlotte-based CCAir and with it several US Airways routes. US Airways secured further regional routes and expanded the CRJ fleet. In addition, 36 new Embraer ERJ 145s were floated in.

In 2000 the codeshare agreement with America West was expanded. 75% of the scheduled flights were again handled with secure contracts. At the same time, Mesa reduced unprofitable turboprop operations and sold 17 of the 19-seater planes. In 2001, Mesa announced a new agreement with America West for the use of 40 larger Bombardier CRJ700 and CRJ900s.

The events of September 11, 2001 plunged the airline into a crisis. Mesa immediately began to reduce costs, parted ways with the turboprop machines and worked with the codeshare partners to become profitable again. Mesa remained profitable even after that.

Between June 2006 and March 2014, Mesa also operated air traffic between the Hawaiian Islands under its own brand identity go! by.
