America West Airlines (shortened to America West ) was an American airline based in Tempe in the metropolitan area of Phoenix ( Arizona ). In 2005 it took over US Airways , whereupon all activities were gradually brought together under the name US Airways until mid-2007. After the merger of the enlarged US Airways with the insolvent American Airlines in 2013, the Tempe airline, which itself ran into difficulties during the 1990s, now forms a core of the largest airline in the world in terms of passenger kilometers.

history

America West Airlines headquarters in Tempe (AZ), which from 2005 also served as the headquarters of the merged US Airways.

America West Airlines was founded in February 1981 and began operating on August 1, 1983. On September 27, 2005, America West took over the larger airline US Airways . The newly created company bore the internationally better-known name US Airways , and by the end of 2007 all America West operations were converted to the new name. On December 9, 2013, the merger of the enlarged US Airways with the then insolvent American Airlines , which was able to leave the bankruptcy proceedings, created the largest airline in the world. It has been operating under the sole name of American Airlines since April 2015 .
