The Piedmont Airlines , previously Henson Airlines is an American regional airline and subsidiary of American Airlines , based at the airport Wicomico near Salisbury (Maryland) .

history

The company was founded in 1931 in Hagerstown (Maryland) by Richard Henson as Henson Flying Service , with whom he offered casual flights and ground services.

His first passenger flights according to Flugplan took place in 1962 under the name Hagerstown Commuter and later as Henson Airlines. Here he flew to Washington National Airport . Allegheny and Henson began one of the first code- sharing agreements in 1967, using Beechcraft 99 aircraft. The following year, they moved the base to Wicomico Airport . From 1977 larger Shorts 330 were used and for the first time the airline reached the million mark in passenger transport. From 1979 even larger De Havilland Canada DHC-7s were used.

In 1983, Piedmont Aviation bought Henson and re- marketed the name as Henson, The Piedmont Regional Airline . Under the umbrella of Piedmont, the airline expanded rapidly, especially in Florida. In 1985 the first De Havilland DHC-8s were used. Both companies were finally bought by the USAir Group in 1987 . Piedmont was fully integrated on May 8, 1989 and the Henson Airlines aircraft were repainted in the USAir Express corporate design .

In 1993 the name Piedmont was revived when the USAir renamed Henson Airlines to Piedmont Airlines. This was done in order to protect the name permanently, because otherwise it would have been available for others after a period of non-use. USAir used this rotation at two other regional companies to protect the names. Jetstream became PSA Airlines and Allegheny Commuter became Allegheny Airlines. After purchasing the Californian PSA ( Pacific Southwest Airlines ), USAir changed its name to US Airways and Piedmont entered the market as US Airways Express . At the turn of the millennium, up to 3 million passengers per year were carried with 52 Dash 8s.

In the course of the merger between US Airways and American Airlines , which was initiated in 2013 , Piedmont Airlines became the property of the new American Airlines. Since then, Piedmont has operated its flights under the American Eagle brand .

Destinations

Under the American Eagle brand, Piedmont serves around 50 different destinations in the east of the USA on behalf of its parent company American Airlines .
