World Atlantic Airlines is a US charter airline and the brand name under which the Caribbean Sun Airlines , based in Miami , appears exclusively to the outside world.

History and destinations

World Atlantic Airlines was founded in September 2002 under the name Caribbean Sun Airlines as part of the Stanford Financial Group . From its headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico , the company's first flight led to Tortola , British Virgin Islands on January 21, 2003 , before concentrating on connections to Antigua as well as flights to the Netherlands Antilles and the US Virgin Islands ; Mainly machines of the type De Havilland DHC-8-100 were used . On the flights, Caribbean Sun Airlines cooperated with the Antiguan sister company Caribbean Star Airlines , which also belonged to the Stanford Financial Group and enabled connecting flights to other Caribbean islands.

Flight operations ceased towards the end of January 2007. The resumption of the same under the name Merengue Airlines Dominicana , which was sought after a subsequent change of ownership , was also unsuccessful and so Caribbean Sun Airlines was finally sold to Tomas Romero, who renamed the company to World Atlantic Airlines . The company, which from now on only operates under this name, then focused on the ACMI charter area .

In 2012 , the US Department of Transportation sanctioned World Atlantic Airlines with a fine of 180,000 in response to irregularities involving Myrtle Beach-based, insolvent Direct Air , for which World Atlantic Airlines had provided ACMI chartered aircraft to commence air traffic USD. The Ministry of Transport saw unfair competition from World Atlantic Airlines as proven; For example, the latter had canceled some of the flights chartered by Direct Air less than ten days in advance and finally refused to repatriate stranded passengers after the ACMI charter was abruptly suspended. The authority pointed out that World Atlantic Airlines should not have operated the flights in the first place, since Direct Air was in default from the start, and that World Atlantic Airlines should have checked the necessary financial and legal requirements on Direct Air's side better.

Starting in 2013, the company carried out deportations on charter flights for the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement police and customs authority, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, to Guatemala, among others.

In September 2017, World Atlantic Airlines also entered into a partnership with the Venezuelan Avior Airlines , having previously worked with the Venezuelan Laser Airlines as part of the ACMI charter . As part of the business relationship with Avior Airlines, World Atlantic Airlines operates ACMI charter flights to Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
