history

The maiden voyage under Captain JD Schwartz began on May 21, 1854 on the Weser and led to New York , where the locksmith arrived on June 29 after 39 days of travel with 312 passengers, apparently all emigrants . Another journey with emigrants also led to New Orleans in 1854 , where the locksmith arrived on December 12 with 313 passengers.

In 1856 the barque was bought by the Oldenburgische Rhederei-Gesellschaft , which had just been founded in Brake and which was managed by Oltmann Thyen . Thyen had already worked for the ship's previous shipping company. Other ships of the shipping company were u. a. the O. Thyen , the Mimi , the Ammerland and the Oldenburg .

For unknown reasons, possibly due to the German-Danish War , the locksmith was flagged out to Russia in the early to mid-1860s and was mainly active in trade between the East Indies and Europe . Captains at this time were HA Kahle (1859–1664), WG Thöle (1864–1867) and BA Müller (1867).

During her service the locksmith had several accidents . On March 19, 1867, near the Isle of Wight, the cabin boy Jacob Hegemann fell from the jib boom , fell into the sea and drowned despite attempts to rescue the sailor Johann Braun from Memel . In May / June of that year, the barque made another voyage from Bremerhaven to New York.

When leaving Liverpool for Rangoon, the locksmith collided with the tug Hero on November 15, 1867 and was badly damaged at the stern . It was repaired in Birkenhead and ran back to Rangoon on November 28th. Since then, there has been no news from the barque.
