history

Cape Air was founded in 1989 by the pilot Dan Wolf and some good friends. Flight operations began on October 16, 1989. Cape Air initially flew between Provincetown, MA, and Boston. In the early 1990s, the route network was expanded to include southeast New England. Destinations in Florida and the Caribbean began to be served in the late 1990s, and flights in Micronesia followed from 2004.

In 1994 Cape Air took over the Nantucket Airline and has since then offered hourly flights between Nantucket and Hyannis under their colors.

At the end of 2007, Cape Air expanded its route network to the northeast and midwest of the USA. In November 2007, Cape Air launched the three daily service between Boston and Rutland, Vermont. The route is subsidized by the US government under the Essential Air Service (EAS). With government support, Cape Air expanded in Indiana in November 2007, with connections from Indianapolis to Evansville and South Bend.

On February 14, 2007, Cape Air entered into a code share agreement with JetBlue for flights departing from Boston Logan International Airport.

After the collapse of Delta Connection's partner company Big Sky Airlines in early 2008, Cape Air replaced the EAS connections from Boston to Plattsburgh , NY and Saranac Lake, NY with three daily flights .

On October 1, 2010, the UAL Corporation and Continental Airlines merged to form United Continental Holdings . The merger also made Continental Airlines' regional partner, Continental Connection, partner of United Express . Cape Air is now a partner of United Express.

Cape Air is planning further EAS connections from Albany, NY to Watertown, Ogdenburg and Massena, NY, and from Lebanon, NH to Boston (as of 2008).

On October 16, 2020, Cape Air presented its first two Tecnam P2012 Travelers at the Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis , which it had received a few weeks earlier and for which it is the first customer. At the beginning of December 2019, the new aircraft started regular service, initially on the 200-kilometer route from Boston to Rutland . Another 18 firmly ordered aircraft are to follow, and there are still options for 90 aircraft. The machines are to replace the large fleet of the old Cessna 402.

From 2022, Cap Air will be the first airline in the world to use the Eviation Alice electric aircraft, which was presented at the Paris Air Show in 2019 .

Cape Air is the largest independent regional airline in the United States. In the high season, Cape Air offers more than 850 flights per day (as of 2008).
