Jeffrey Taffe (born February 19, 1981 in Hastings , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who was most recently under contract with HC Slovan Bratislava from the KHL .
Career
The 1.91 m tall center initially played ice hockey from 1996 to 1999 with the Hastings Huskies , the high school team of Hastings High School , in the high school league system of the United States. After completing his high school career, Taffe won the annual Minnesota Mr. Hockey award in calendar year 1999, which honors the best high school player in the US state of Minnesota . Then he was during his college days for the team of the University of Minnesota in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association active, a league in the game operation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association before the striker with NHL Entry Draft in 2000 as 30 in the first round of the St. Louis Blues was selected.
However, the left shooter was never on the ice for the Blues in the NHL, but was transferred to the Phoenix Coyotes after completing his studies in a swap deal with Ladislav Nagy , Michal Handzuš and a first-round draft pick for Keith Tkachuk . In Arizona, however, he did not manage to establish himself permanently as a regular player. During the 2005/06 season , Taffe moved to the New York Rangers in exchange for Jamie Lundmark , but there he was also used except for two missions at Hartford Wolf Pack , the Rangers' farm team in the American Hockey League , so that he soon became employed the Phoenix Coyotes returned.
In the summer of 2007, the attacker signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins , who first sent him to the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the AHL, but then called him to their NHL squad.
On July 5, 2011, Taffe received a two-way contract for one year with the Minnesota Wild and was mostly used in the Houston Eros in the AHL in the following season . A year later he was signed by the Hershey Bears . In the 2012/13 season he was top scorer of the Bears with 71 points from 73 games and was elected to the Second All-Star Team of the AHL.
After ten years as a professional in North America, Taffe signed his first contract in Europe in May 2013 - with Linköpings HC from Svenska Hockeyligan . Only two weeks later he asked for the contract to be suspended for personal reasons and stayed in the United States. The 2013/14 season he spent again with the Hershey Bears before he started his contract with Linköpings HC the following season. In the 2014/15 season he reached 59 points in 54 games and was the second best scorer (behind Derek Ryan with 60 points) in the entire Swedish league. These achievements led to the engagement of Taffe by Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk from the KHL in April 2015.
In the 2016/17 season he played for HC Slovan Bratislava in the KHL and scored 48 points in 58 games of the season, making him top scorer within the team ahead of Jonathan Cheechoo . He then moved to Switzerland for HC Ambrì-Piotta .
In summer 2018 he returned to Slovan Bratislava and played there until the end of the 2018/19 season.
