Handzuš started his career in his hometown with SK Banská Bystrica . He had his first appearance in the men's team in the 1993/94 season in the second-rate first division of Slovakia . During the NHL Entry Draft in 1995 he was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round in 101st place, but remained in Slovakia and played one more season for his home club, as well as another season for the ŠKP PS Poprad .

In the summer of 1997 the Blues brought him to their farm team in Worcester to the Worcester IceCats , where he knew how to convince. From the following season he played exclusively in the National Hockey League . In March 2001, he was given together with Ladislav Nagy , Jeff Taffe and two draft voting rights to the Phoenix Coyotes , who in return transferred Keith Tkachuk to the Blues. Handzuš ran two seasons for the Coyotes and was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers in June 2002 together with Robert Esche . The barter items in this deal were Brian Boucher and a draft pick.

During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , Handzuš played for the HKm Zvolen , with whom he reached the playoff final of the Slovak Extra League . After the end of the strike, he returned to Philadelphia and was handed over to the Chicago Blackhawks a year later , who transferred Kyle Calder to the Flyers. After eight games for Chicago, Handzuš suffered a cruciate ligament rupture , so he missed the remainder of the 2006/07 season. Since his contract with the Blackhawks expired in the summer of 2007, he signed a contract as a free agent with the Los Angeles Kings .

On July 1, 2011 Handzuš signed a two-year contract with the San Jose Sharks . In early April 2013 they transferred him to the Chicago Blackhawks. His one-year contract was not renewed there following the 2013/14 season.

Then Handzuš returned to Europe and was signed in December 2014 by HC 05 Banská Bystrica , for whom he had already played during the lockout in the 2012/13 season. With the HC 05 he won the Slovak championship in 2017 . Due to a hand injury that necessitated an operation, he missed the entire 2017/18 season. He bridged this time as a coach at the Deutschland Cup 2018 and for a few games at HC 05 Banská Bystrica. He then ended his active career.

He won the silver medal with the Slovak national team in 2000 and 2012 and became world champion in 2002.
