Brian Boucher (born January 2, 1977 in Woonsocket , Rhode Island ) is a former American ice hockey goalkeeper who played 371 games for the Philadelphia Flyers , Phoenix Coyotes , Calgary Flames , Chicago Blackhawks , Columbus Blue Jackets , San Jose Sharks and Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League . Boucher set two NHL records in 2004 when he remained clean for 332 minutes and achieved five shutouts in a row.
Career
Boucher began his career in the 1994/95 season with the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League and was selected after his rookie season in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round at position 22. The following two years he continued to play in the WHL with the Americans and received the Del Wilson Trophy for the best goalkeeper in the WHL after his last junior year .
For the 1997/98 season Boucher moved to the Flyers' farm team , the Philadelphia Phantoms , in the American Hockey League . There he played for two years, won the Calder Cup with the Phantoms and was used for the first time in the NHL in the 1999/2000 season . He was able to convince immediately and managed four shutouts in his first season . His good performance led to the fact that he took over the post as regular goalkeeper from John Vanbiesbrouck in the playoffs and reached the final of the Eastern Conference with the Flyers . In the 2000/01 season he then had to line up behind the newly signed Roman Čechmánek , who played an outstanding season. Due to Boucher's performance, a promotion to goalkeeper would not have been justified at this point, because he lagged behind last year's form in all respects. In the playoffs he only played 37 minutes, in which he conceded three goals. The 2001/02 season , however, was a bit more positive. Boucher was able to build on his old form and shared the post as number 1 with Čechmánek. But despite good performances by both goalkeepers in the playoffs, the Flyers were eliminated in the first round. In the summer of 2002 Boucher was transferred to the Phoenix Coyotes in an exchange deal with a draft right for Michal Handzuš and Robert Esche . There he was now the sole goalkeeper, but the season was not positive. Boucher conceded too many goals and in the end it wasn't enough to qualify for the playoffs. Also in the 2003/04 season , the Coyotes could not reach the playoffs, despite a better performing Brian Boucher.
Before the 2004/05 NHL season , Boucher extended in Phoenix by one year, but the contract was canceled a little later because the season was completely canceled due to the lockout . Boucher then signed with HV 71 Jönköping in the Swedish Elitserien , but was released after two months.
At the beginning of the 2005/06 season , Boucher signed a new contract with the Phoenix Coyotes. But the omens were not good for him, because in Curtis Joseph they had signed an excellent new goalkeeper. In addition, Boucher injured himself before the season. He therefore only completed eleven games with rather poor performances for Phoenix before he was transferred to the Calgary Flames with Mike Leclerc for Steven Reinprecht and Philippe Sauvé . As number 2 behind Miikka Kiprusoff , he played three more times in the season, but still fell short of his possibilities. His contract expired at the end of the season and after Jamie McLennan was signed by Calgary as a back-up goalkeeper, Boucher's contract was not extended. Shortly before the start of the 2006/07 season , he signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks . There he took over the role of the back-up goalie behind Nikolai Chabibulin . Right at the beginning of the season, Chabibulin broke a finger and Boucher stepped in for him, but played very weakly. He only came to a few more missions and was signed in February 2007 by the Columbus Blue Jackets on the waiver list. There he was number two behind Fredrik Norrena . In the summer of 2007, Boucher underwent shoulder surgery. After no NHL team had offered him a contract, he returned to Philadelphia, where he played in the AHL for the Philadelphia Phantoms , the Flyers' farm team, and after a long time came back to regular appearances as a regular goalkeeper. On February 26, 2008 he signed the San Jose Sharks , who needed an experienced substitute for the playoffs behind their regular goalkeeper Yevgeny Nabokow . Boucher filled this position for the rest of the season and all of the following and was able to convince despite a few appearances. Becoming aware of this, his ex-team Philadelphia Flyers signed the free agent on July 1, 2009.
On July 1, 2011, Boucher signed a two-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes . There he played only ten games in the following two seasons before he was transferred again to the Philadelphia Flyers in January 2013. For the 2013/14 season the Americans was the EV train from the National League A committed. After only five games, however, Boucher was released again. The American then ended his career.
International
Boucher represented the US U20 selection at the 1996 and 1997 Junior World Championships . He led the team in 1997 with his outstanding performance to the final, where the Americans were defeated by the Canadians 2-0.
