Casey Nelson (born July 18, 1992 in Stillwater , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Buffalo Sabers of the National Hockey League since March 2016 and at the same time for their farm team, the Rochester Americans , in American Hockey League plays in the position of defender .

Career

Nelson initially spent his junior years between 2010 and 2013 in the North American Hockey League , where he first spent two years with the Alaska Avalanche and then spent a year with the Johnstown Tomahawks . From the NAHL, the defender moved to college in the summer of 2013, where he began studying at Minnesota State University, Mankato . Parallel to his studies, he played for the university's ice hockey team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his first two years he won the Broadmoor Trophy with the team for the championship winner of the WCHA. He also received numerous awards until the end of the 2015/16 season, including being named Defensive Player of the Year in the division. Furthermore, he was appointed to several selection teams.

Still, Nelson remained of the franchises of the National Hockey League ungedraftet and therefore signed March 2016 as a free agent contract with the Buffalo Sabers from the NHL. The signature ended the defender's college days prematurely. The American made his debut in the NHL during the 2015/16 season . Nelson spent the following season mainly in the American Hockey League with Buffalo's farm team , the Rochester Americans . Nevertheless, he came to other missions in the NHL, which were split in half between the two squads in the 2017/18 season .
