Tom Daschle

Thomas Andrew "Tom" Daschle (born December 9, 1947 in Aberdeen , South Dakota ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party .

His ancestors came from the village of Kleinliebental near Odessa and were Black Sea Germans . From 1979 to 1987 he was a member of the US House of Representatives and represented South Dakota as a senator in the US Senate from 1987 to 2005 . In 2004 Daschle lost his re-election to the Republican John Thune .

Daschle was from 1995 to 2005 chairman of the Democrats in the Senate, from 1995 to 2001 and from 2003 to 2005 as a minority leader , from 2001 to 2003 as a majority leader .

On November 19, 2008, it was announced that Daschle was to be the new Minister of Health in President Barack Obama's cabinet . On February 3, 2009, he withdrew his candidacy due to errors in his tax return.
