Charles Hall Dillon
Charles Hall Dillon (born December 18, 1853 in Jasper , Indiana , † September 15, 1929 in Vermillion , South Dakota ) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1919 he represented the first constituency of the state of South Dakota in the US House of Representatives .
Early years
Charles Dillon attended public schools in his home country. He then studied law at Indiana University, among other things. After being admitted to the bar in 1876, he began to work in his new profession in Jasper. A stopover in Marion ( Iowa ) he arrived in 1882 in the Dakota Territory . There he first settled in Mitchell and from 1894 in Yankton as a lawyer.
Political rise
Charles Dillon became a member of the Republican Party , whose National Conventions he attended in 1900 and 1908 as a delegate. From 1903 to 1911 he was a member of the South Dakota Senate . In the 1912 congressional elections, Charles Dillon was elected to the US House of Representatives as a candidate for South Dakota’s first constituency. There he replaced Charles H. Burke on March 4, 1913 . After he was confirmed in office in the elections of 1914 and 1916, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until March 3, 1919. In 1918 he decided not to run again.
Another résumé
After retiring from Washington, DC , Dillon returned to working as a lawyer in Yankton. In 1922 he moved to Vermillion. That year he was appointed a judge in his state's Supreme Court. He held this office until his resignation on November 15, 1926. In 1924 he had unsuccessfully applied for his party's nomination for the US Senate . Charles Dillon had been retired since 1926. He died in Vermillion in 1929 and was buried in Yankton.
