Freeman Tulley Knowles (born October 10, 1846 in Harmony , Somerset County , Maine , † June 1, 1910 in Deadwood , South Dakota ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he represented the second constituency of the state of South Dakota in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and advancement

Freeman Knowles attended Bloomfield Academy in Skowhegan . During the Civil War he served in the Union Army between 1862 and 1865. After the war he moved to Denison , Iowa . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1869, he began to work in his new profession in this city. In 1886 he moved to Nebraska , where he published newspapers in several cities. Eventually he moved to Deadwood, South Dakota, where he published the Evening Independent newspaper.

Political career

Knowles became a member of the Populist Party , relatively successful in the 1880s and 1890s , which later became the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1896 , Knowles was elected as a populist candidate for the US House of Representatives. There he replaced Robert J. Gamble from the Republican Party on March 4, 1897 . Knowles only served one term in Congress ; then took over on March 4, 1899 Robert Gamble again the seat for the second constituency of South Dakota. After his time in the federal capital Washington , Freeman Knowles returned to the newspaper business in Deadwood. He also died in this city in 1910.
