Kristi Noem (birth name: Kristi Arnold ) (* the 30th November 1971 in Watertown , Codington County , South Dakota ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . She was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019 and has been Governor of South Dakota since 2019 .

education and profession

Kristi Noem is the daughter of Ron and Corinne Arnold. After graduating from Hamlin High School in Hayti in 1990, she first attended Mount Marty College in Yankton and then from 1990 to 1992 Northern State University in Aberdeen . In 2011, she earned a bachelor's degree in political science from South Dakota State University in Brookings . She worked as a cattle breeder and operator of a hunting guest house, worked as a restaurant manager, media consultant and in public relations.

She has two daughters and a son with her husband, Bryon Noem. You live in Castlewood .

Political career

Her political career began with the election to the South Dakota House of Representatives , of which she was a member from 2007 to 2010. In the 2010 election she was elected to the US House of Representatives for South Dakota and is a representative of the state's only congressional electoral district . She was re-elected three times, most recently in 2016 with 64 percent of the vote. This mandate ended on January 3, 2019.

After her re-election in 2016, she announced that she would run for governorship in South Dakota in 2018 . She prevailed in the Republican primary against the state Attorney General Marty Jackley by 14 percentage points after polls had long predicted a close decision. In the November 2018 main election, Noem met Democrat Billie Sutton, a moderate state senator and former rodeo rider who is paraplegic after a riding accident. Noem prevailed in the election with 51 to 47.6 percent of the vote. She became the first woman to serve as South Dakota governor on January 5, 2019.

Positions

Kristi Noem is a representative of the conservative tea party movement and as such is committed to preventing abortions ( Pro-Life ), against same-sex marriage and for a largely unrestricted right to gun ownership . In the 2018 election campaign, the National Rifle Association , the main gun lobbyist, declared its support for Noem.

As governor, she imposed the lowest restrictions of any state in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Dakota. South Dakota was one of the few states that did not have a general curfew.
